Metal Insider have compiled a list of the best selling metal and hard rock albums in the U.S. for the year of 2015, presumably as per Nielsen SoundScan sales tracking. The list isn’t limited only to album’s released in 2015, but rather the albums that sold the most during the calendar year. Here’s what was shared:

Kid Rock – “First Kiss” (354,000 sold)
Breaking Benjamin – “Dark Before Dawn” (305,000 sold)
Five Finger Death Punch – “Got Your Six” (281,000)
Disturbed – “Immortalized” (234,000 copies)
Metallica – “Master Of Puppets” (202,000)
Journey – “Greatest Hits” (199,000 sold)
AC/DC – “Back In Black” (163,000 sold)
AC/DC – “Rock Or Bust” (159,500 sold)
Shinedown – “Threat To Survival” (153,500 sold)
Metallica – “…And Justice For All” (150,000 sold)
Iron Maiden – “Book Of Souls” (148,000 sold)
Halestorm – “Into The Wild Life” (143,000)
Foo Fighters – “Greatest Hits” (142,000 sold)
Metallica – “Metallica” (141,000 sold)

Kid Rock – “Devil Without a Cause” (134,000 sold)
Nickelback – “Dark Horse” (122,500)
Three Days Grace – “Human” (121,000)

An interesting side note is that Metallica‘s sales are pure profit for them, as they own the masters for their albums. While rock & metal had a great year, in contrast, Billboard have shared the top ten selling album’s in the U.S. for 2015 as per SoundScan, and the numbers are a bit staggering:

01. Adele – “25” (7,441,000 sold)
02 . Taylor Swift – “1989” (1,993,000 sold)
03 . Justin Bieber – “Purpose” (1,269,000 sold)
04 . Ed Sheeran – “X” (1,162,000 sold)
05 . Drake – “If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late” (1,142,000 sold)
06 . Sam Smith – “In the Lonely Hour” (1,018,000 sold)
07 . Meghan Trainor – “Title” (1,007,000 sold)
08 . The Weeknd – “Beauty Behind the Madness” (862,000 sold)
09 . Soundtrack – “Fifty Shades Of Grey” (861,000 sold)
10 . Luke Bryan – “Kill The Lights” (851,000 sold)

The sales above were tabulated by Nielsen SoundScan for the tracking period Dec. 29, 2014 through Dec. 31, 2015 and represent pure sales, as opposed album equivalent sales, which factor in streams, etc.. To put that in perspective, the combined rounded off sales of all the metal and hard rock albums mentioned above comes in at 3,562,200 copies sold—under half the number of units Adele moved with “25“.
