I vociferously defended 10,000 Days at first, but now I’ve come to realize that yes, it has been Tool’s weakest… or maybe “least strong” is a better way to say it… effort to date. I can live with that.
Very, very, very interested to see where they go from here. Very. Très. Viele.

Disagree. If you’re a tool, you’ll like anything a band puts out without question. If you’re a Tool fan, you hold them to a higher standard than “all those other bands”.

    • Honestly I thought Lateralus was the band’s weakest. It had higher peaks than 10,000 Days, but the last like 4 tracks of it was nothing but 20 minutes of filler and borderline unlistenable.

    • they can come out with an album every year but if they setlist stays the same for every tour whats the point? Last time I saw them in NY they looked like they were working a 9-5 job, quite boring, quite lame and very disappointing. I’d rather watch flies fuck

I would say Tool is more overratted i hear “Tool is so original!”, “Maynard is the best vocalist ever!”, “Tool is best band ever!” from yuppies, jocks and, other people at the bar/online/ at concerts. those idiots don’t about say that about Metallica except “Metallica rocks!”

    • 10,000 days grew in my book. Started off as a bland record, and the more I listened, I noticed it’s their grooviest album, a lot of classy, snaking, classic Tool sounding riffs. Best or most intriguing album though, no. “Rosetta Stoned” is rocking, it’s a steam roller.

Metallica still know hows to put on a show, I still haven’t seen them. I’d like to. Is that not cool?

    • The only time I’ve ever seen Tool was on Ozzfest ’98 and they were really fucking good. I remember some skinny, raver-looking fucko walking around with his shirt off and he had the Tool logo tattooed across his chest. I’m not sure if it was because he was a Tool fan or because he was just a fucking tool and wanted people to know it or both (I’m voting for “Both”), but I bet that dude is STOKED by this news!

@monkey – Wow, now that’s a stretch – most overrated in the last 20 years. I can’t stand the “Maynard is god!” assholes either, but I think they deserve all the credit they get. It’s unfortunate that it’s “cool to like Tool”, ‘cuz that attracts legions of douchebags, but what can you do… Most overrated band of the last 20 years = Green Day.

yeah I dont think people really take time to look at tool’s lyrical content and see how fucking awesome and original and crude and sarcastic and smart and pessimistically funny it can all be which is why tool is fucking classic. there’s a reason a shit-ton of people still wear tool t-shirts; because theyre fucking really really good. that and their guitarist helped sculpt the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park. How can you not like tool?

Tool is without a doubt the smartest band in the history of music. Period. Every album has been beyond words, and yes, 10,000 Days was their “least strong,” – @robichaud1, thank you – but other band’s best albums still don’t compare. As for Lateralus’ last 4 songs being “filler:” It’s about the emotionality. Sit in a dark room with headphones on, Start with “Disposition,” and go ’till the end of the album, and just be. It’s so intoxicating. Anywho, I’m VERY much looking forward to the new material. I’m curious where they’ll take this one because, like every other album, it’s always something new. Very good.

To use words like “smartest band” portrays a dense mindset. I love Tool, and they used to mean everything to me, but I couldn’t even say MY favorite band is “the smartest”. Besides.. classical music usually takes the most knowledge to create, and intelligence to rouse.

    • @ Afghan who cres how many people wears their shirts that does not make a good band. Hell a bunch of people still Metallica shirts does that eman they are great too?

and as for “take time to look at tool’s lyrical content and see how fucking awesome and original and crude and sarcastic and smart and pessimistically funny.”

There are a bunch bands who do the same thing and, are way better musically.

    • “The title track, “Lateralus”, incorporates the Fibonacci sequence. The theme of the song describes the desire of humans to explore and to expand for more knowledge and a deeper understanding of everything. The lyrics “spiral out”, refers to this desire and also to the Fibonacci spiral, which is formed by creating and arranging squares for each number in the sequence’s 1,1,2,3,5,8,… pattern, and drawing a curve that connects to two corners of each square. This would, allowed to continue onwards, theoretically create a never-ending and infinitely-expanding spiral.”
That sounds pretty smart to me. Not my favorite band, but I don’t think you can say they don’t write intelligent and impressive music.

Smarter bands? More talented bands? Sure, probably.

But Tool still have brilliant songwriting & lyrics, and are absolutely amazing at what they do. No one sounds like them, and they don’t sound like anyone else. Not a whole lot of bands can say that.

Tool’s hardcore fans are generally, yes, ‘tools’. The same can be said for Pink Floyd, Rush, Zeppelin, and a lot of other classically great bands.

So who’s as smart as Tool and better musically? Yeah, exactly. Tool’s a genius band because they not only sing about ideals far beyond what everyday people think about, and not only because they’re musical complexity is far above everyone else, but it’s that they can still manage to write an album that goes multi-platinum, and they’re music is very listenable, to the point where it’s actually on the radio. I’ve been told be people, “Oh, you like Tool? Check out these guys, they’re geniuses.” The music is always just noise and they think a song that’s 8 minutes of droning and 3 total notes is a song. Tool incorporates that, sure, but at the same time they still make legitimate songs out of the sound effects and different “noises.” It’s incredible. This album will hopefully be just as strong, if not stronger, than all of their previous efforts. Yes yes.

“So who’s as smart as Tool and better musically? Yeah, exactly.”

I love when people say Tool is the greatest band ever musically, lyrically and blah, blah, blah… It’s the first indication that they still rely on the radio to tell them what to listen to. Then they claim other bands are just noise, which negates any other point they may think they have, seeing that most of Tool’s music is “just noise”. Yeah, they’re a good band, but if you crawled out from the rock you’re hiding under, you’ll find 10 bands that are better musically, lyrically, technically. It’s not hard, you’re just close minded. Grow up.

    • Some of you guys are real douchebags. Where I live people don’t even listen to rock music as a genre. So if I see someone with a rock shirt it’s already a thumbs up and if it happens to be a RESPECTABLE band (i.e. not U2) more power to them. It’s not like there is so much rock music on radio to bitch about Tool or any band that AT LEAST try to have a unique sound. Where do you people get off?

      Not true. 15% at most.
I’m a big Tool fan (not a gay joke), and I’m also interested in discovering other good, “smart” music. So can someone please throw out a couple names instead of just saying there are all these “other bands” that are way better? Not very helpful.

Yes, thank you. Examples please? But hey, as long as I listen to anything mainstream, apparently I have no credibility because I’m not “open minded” enough to listen to anything else. Pretty sure bands like Meshuggah, Ventana, Ashes Divide, Dream Theater and In Flames aren’t toppin’ the charts anytime soon, and I’ve got that in my collection, but, whatever. It’s nice that if you’re not an elitest douche, you’re opinion doesn’t matter. “Don’t conform to the status quo, and you have to hate everything the exact same as we do.” Over half of the people on here are the “Goth Kids” from South Park. Yeah.

    • Its nice to have your own opinion and all, no one is going to hate you for it. But how about you not come at other people for liking a band. If you think they are overrated thats fine, then dont come here and bitch about a band you claim to hate. If you hate them so much then why talk about them? Let people who are excited about this news talk and not have someone who feels the need to have their negative fucking attitude voiced for no apparent reason bash their opinions on the news.

Damn, I don’t visit the site for a couple days to study for finals and I miss an update like this.
      -
Here’s the deal. Tool is only overrated in the context provided by the “Maynard is God” assholes (thanks Robi). If you’ve confused a musician as a deity, obviously that’s overrated by definition. Here are a couple statements that aren’t overrating the band. Maynard is an insightful and poetic man with an amazing voice. Adam, Danny and Justin are some of the best at what they do. Out of the hundreds of bands/artists I’ve seen live, Tool can recreate their album sound in a live setting as well as, if not better than anyone else. 10,000 Days, despite being their worst effort, is still better than 99% of the shit I’ve heard since then from other bands. Tool is the ONLY modern rock band deserving of their arena headliner status. Even if the new album is on the same level as 10,000 Days, that is better than having no new Tool album at all.
      -
@ FP, The past couple of Tool tours have had elaborate laser light shows. It’s not reasonable to expect a band with that expensive of a stage show to change the setlist on a nightly basis.
      -
@ buttcrackguy. As all “information” on the internet, the info is only as valid as the source. If a Wikipedia article cites legit sources, then the information is also legit. Referencing Wikipedia does not automatically discredit someone, especially not if they’ve done their own fact-checking.

Stoked for something new from Tool! can’t wait! It’s amazing how many people I’ve seen that think 10,000 Days is “weak” or “their worst album”. I didn’t care for it that much when it was released, and I didn’t listen to it as much as Lateralus, or Ænima mainly because of 1 basic reason. I was ignorant. But the more I listened, the more I discovered, the more this album turned from Mediocre to Masterpiece. Not only is 10,000 Days esoteric, but the message it sends is inspiring and mind-bending. It’s just a shame, really – 10,000 Days is still ahead of it’s time and it’s been what, 5 years? Yeah there are a lot of filler tracks, so what? The last two albums had them too, but what most people don’t understand is the relationship between him and his Mother and it’s “weak” because you make it weak. I’m glad most of you feel that way. Honestly, because no matter who dislikes it or thinks it’s “weak” I still fucking love it and I’ll always make that clear to anyone. Take this guy up here for example:

“Even if the new album is on the same level as 10,000 Days, that is better than having no new Tool album at all.” -HonoluluBlueBalls

This is so fucking pathetic. Have you even seen 2001: A Space Odyssey? Do you even understand Intension? Or even know what that word means? Explain to me how it’s their “worst effort”? Elaborate a little, I want to know your opinion on why you think it’s their “worst effort” HonoluluBlueBalls – indulge me, because I for one, would never compare it to anything other than what it is, a masterpiece. To each his own I guess and for the record, anyone who thinks the album is their “weakest” is ignorant.

    • 10,000 days was not ahead of its time. They didn’t change their tones or production style, but went with the times. It was a great retreading, grooving version of Tool, and that comes maturity.

Great album, yes. But I don’t think in 20 years it will be alongside the great of greats hard rock/prog albums. That belongs to Ænima

Getting closer, I love Tool but I really hope this next one surpasses 10,000 days. Wasn’t a horrible album, close for the standards I hold for the band but someone said it best saying that it was their “least strong” record.

    • Settle down people. They are just 4 guys making music. Geez. As a band, they have done a good job of defining themselves and their sound. As far as 10,000 Days goes; be thankful they don’t just re-make the same album every time and each album has it’s own vibe.

Name 10 similar bands better than Tool. Seriously. I don’t think it’s possible, because everytime I hear someone say, “if you like tool, then you’ll love…” I check them out and they either sound like neo-goth shit or some kind of prog nu-metal. I just checked out Karnivool on JagerWulfs recomendation and they aren’t bad, but they kind of remind me of if Trapt starting tripping often. There is no one I’ve found that comes close to Tool other Than King Crimson, but I really don’t think they sound similar at all. Tool had a lot more influences than them. i.e. Melvins. I think someone’s “guilty” of being a pretentious fuck.

Yeah I saw this headline in Top Posts and got all excited. I proceeded to click on it and see that I was the very first person to comment on it. I then proceeded to question whether I had eaten some good brownies last night because I had no memory of doing this. Only when I discovered that someone really bored was rehashing headlines from JANUARY did I begin to feel stable again.

        Thanks for the head trip.

    • After the ridiculous greatness of “Aenima” and “Lateralus”, “10,000 Days” was a letdown. But then again, anything would after those 2 albums. That being said, if there is a “lazy” Tool album, “10,000 Days” is it. I’m a little apprehensive about a new album from them, not because of the musicians, but because of Keenan who seems preoccupied with everything but Tool.

Past their prime, perhaps. Overrated? Actually, underrated. Tool are still a cult band, mostly unknown to the mainstream of music listeners. They have a talent and integrity 90% of musicians can only dream about. They are the only band of the 90s still making great music together.
