Glassjaw/Head Automatica vocalist Daryl Palumbo sat down with Good Charlotte‘s Joel Madden on the newest episode of the latter’s ‘Artist Friendly‘ podcast. Palumbo spoke at length about his musical upbringing, his career, fatherhood, his favorite bands and more in this lengthy chat.
In addition to reminiscing about potential band names Glassjaw passed over around their inception (‘Swift Kick‘ was apparently in the running), Palumbo was also asked about the new music he has been working on. He went on to say [transcribed by theprp.com]:
“I love a bunch of Head Automatica songs we have happening. Glassjaw always — me and Justin [Beck, Glassjaw guitarist] — always have a bunch of ideas always going around. Always a bunch of reworks going on of things when we’re playing. Um, lot of new Head Automatica stuff. Yeah, we’re playing two of them. Trying to get ready another third one to start playing and just see how it is.
[I’m] really happy. Yeah, very happy. I mean, so many years passed, that I’m so lucky to even be able to do something with a name of a project from years ago, [I] feel I’m blessed enough to be playing and feel progressed a little as far as what I do and I’m playing with guys that are just monsters.”
There of course has been a dearth of Glassjaw music for roughly a decade, with their last album “Material Control” having landed back in 2017. Later asked what his favorite Glassjaw release was, he landed on their 1997 debut EP “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang“, stating:
“I don’t even know. I have little bits throughout time I like. I always like the moments that were really heavy, but not terribly stony heavy. There’s always a lot of stonery, stony, metally, breakdowny heavy things. I always enjoyed the very avant-garde screamy moments the most. I don’t know. I like uh, we had a five-song EP before our first real record, back in the hardcore show days, and that was my favorite.”
He went on to say of that era, “I mean I like that style at the time. [We] Sounded like a little kid Quicksand, little kid Shift. That was, you know, I liked that. That was a good time.” As for the progress with Head Automatica‘s new EP, Palumbo offered:
“I mean, it could be done awfully soon. There’s a lot of tunes that are pretty, pretty ready to go. We’re playing a bunch. Playing two right now. Pretty much a third one is kind of ready to be played. We have a bunch. Definitely a bunch fully tracked and ready… It sounds great. A lot of it sounds really great. High energy. Good. Very fun. Some of it’s pretty pop, poptacular. A lot of it is, you know, far out, a little more aggressive and dancey.”
