System Of A Down‘s 2001 hit single “Chop Suey!” has hit another significant milestone. That definitive early 2000s era nü-metal track from the Armenian-American metal band has just crossed over 2 billion plays on Spotify alone. The group first entered the billions club on Spotify with that track back in April of 2023.
“Chop Suey!” was originally launched into the world back in August of 2001, serving as the lead single from the band’s 6x platinum-certified sophomore album “Toxicity“. “Chop Suey!” was last certified 5x platinum by the RIAA back in July of 2022, and given the continued success of the track since, one would expect more certifications to eventually follow. The band’s drummer John Dolmayan commented on this latest milestone:
This never becomes normal to me, I remember the days playing to four people including the bartender.
While Spotify‘s plays of the song represent a significant chunk of its digital market share, it doesn’t even tell the full story of the track’s staggering reach, given the 1.5 billion views the official music video upload of the song on YouTube has racked up, and the various other platforms the song is available to stream on.
