Max And Iggor Cavalera Have Turned Down Playing Sepultura's Farewell Show Following Recent Discussions

After several years of farewell touring, the end for Sepultura is nigh. While the Brazilian metal legends are still finalizing the details for their final show, it has become increasingly clear that the band’s former brotherly duo of vocalist/guitarist Max Cavalera and Iggor Cavalera will not be involved.

Both of the Cavalera siblings were key components of the group’s earlier works. However, an internal dispute in the band over the management approach taken by Max‘s wife Gloria led to Max exiting the band in 1996. Iggor remained onboard until 2006.

In the decades since, the Cavalera brothers have reunited together and have taken to re-recording early output from Sepultura under their Cavalera banner. They’ve also frequently toured on those highly influential early outings from the Sepultura catalog.

Despite decades of estrangement, Sepultura guitarist Andrea Kisser was hopeful to effectively have a full circle moment when the Sepultura hang it up later this year. Back in 2024, Kisser issued a public plea to the Cavalera brothers, that in part read:

“We don’t care who is right or wrong. We’re never gonna get to that point. [Laughs] We have different point of views and different perspectives about same historical events and stuff. So let’s jam, let’s have a good time for the fans, for us, for ourselves, and really close this amazing 43 years or 44, whatever it’s gonna be at the time, in peace with ourselves, and really reach for something different afterwards. At least in my point of view, I like to, of course, continue with music and everything, but maybe do something different. Who knows?”

With the end of Sepultura now being soberingly close, Kisser has revealed that his attempts to reunite that classic era lineup have been turned down. Kisser did manage to have a conversation with Iggor several months ago and also reached out to Max through representatives, but neither were interested in participating. Kisser recently told Metal Hammer of that final show, the details for which are still being hammered out:

“We did invite the Cavalera brothers. I spoke to Iggor personally on a phone call a few months ago and we started some communication. Even our managers went to talk to their management and stuff. But, they don’t want to be a part of it, and that’s OK. It’s a choice.”

Speaking to Metal Hammer now of his desire to have the brothers back in the fold for one last concert, Kisser stated, “it would make sense to have a celebration at the end, for the fans, and just to enjoy ourselves onstage”: “[It could be] like it was on ‘Roots‘, you know? Despite all the fucking crazy stuff around it, we managed to make that album and finish what we had to do, you know?”
