Former Incubus/Roots bassist Ben Kenney has released his new solo single, “Fires“. The song is his first material to be released since undergoing successful surgery to remove a brain tumor several years ago. That surgery hasn’t been without complications however, leaving Kenney permanently deaf in one ear and suffering from partial facial paralysis. Shortly after the surgery, Kenney also suffered another blow, in the loss of his father.

In the wake of the surgery, Kenney stepped down from Incubus, with that multi-platinum alternative rock band eventually replacing him with Nicole Row. Speaking of the adversity he has weathered in recent years and his decision to exit the aforementioned band, Kenney stated:

“The last few years have been really challenging. I needed a hard reset. I called Mike Einzinger and thanked him for the chance to be a part of their world. It was now time to step into myself.”

As for “Fires“, he offered:

“It’s one of the hardest songs for me to sing because I feel like I’m still living it, but it’s all very cathartic for me — music is a great way to turn healing into something that can be shared with others.”
