In their late 90s and early 00s heyday, Roadrunner Records were notorious for cashing in with numerous re-releases and deluxe editions of hit albums from their roster. Slipknot‘s game-changing self-titled 1999 album was certainly one of the victims of that excessive marketing/greed.
Thanks to a copyright infringement dispute over samples featured in “Frail Limb Nursery” and “Purity“, the first reissue of the album actually saw the track listing scaled back . However, across various expanded reissues, digipaks, and the later 10th anniversary edition of the record, there’s been no shortage of bonus material from it out there.
Thus, with the 25th anniversary of the record having taken place on June 29th of this year, the Iowan group are having to dig a bit deeper for their intended upcoming reissue of the 2x multi-platinum effort in celebration of that milestone.
Slipknot percussionist M. Shawn “Clown” Crahan seems up to the task, with the vaults of the masked metallers being cracked open for a newly revised collection of bonus offerings. Speaking with Metal Hammer, Crahan spilled the beans on what’s set to be featured on this likely definitive release of the landmark album. He stated:
“I’m fully involved with putting together a reissue package, because I’m the band caretaker. I’m the one that held everything over the years: all the DAT tapes from the [sound]board from all our first shows, all the videotapes from studio sessions at SR Audio and Indigo Ranch, different test mixes that we gave to other people that we said ‘No’ to at that time and that were never released, but are amazing.
They would never have been listened to 25 years ago, but now that the golden egg has been laid, and everyone knows it, you’re not going to listen to another mix and go, ‘This is better’, you’re just gonna go, ‘Wow, this is Slipknot like this, 25 years ago.’”
He continued:
“There’s new artwork, new photos from the time, there’s so much music that’s so punk rock from board tapes, there’s video documents, there’s a lot – audio, visuals, everything. It’s the best of all things Slipknot.”
Thus far, Crahan has yet to lock in a release date for the outing. However, their ongoing live celebration of the album rolls on with the following dates booked:
