Megadeth, etc. drummer Dirk Verbeuren has called out the questionable use of past Soilwork art in a hoodie from Swiss/French luxury fashion house Vetements. That piece, according to Verbueren, features a patch of altered cover art for Soilwork‘s sixth studio album, “Stabbing The Drama“. The latter was originally done by artist Mircea Gabriel Eftemie.
Verbeuren, who drummed for Soilwork on that album, mentioned in his post that the Vetements piece was apparently retailing for roughly $1600 USD. While it doesn’t appear to be available for sale through the fashion house’s official website, this similar ‘I adore hardcore’ metal culture co-opted piece is available around that price point.
Elsewhere in the hoodie, it looks as though the logo for Ensiferum and the original box art for the ‘Diablo II‘ video game have also have been incorporated into the piece. Vetements previously made headlines in the metal scene 2016 when they rolled out a line of generic metal-inspired merch for high prices.
Verbeuren vented earlier today (September 11th):
“Metalheads, I’d love to hear your opinion about this @vetements_official garment including @soilwork’s Stabbing The Drama cover art, created by @mirceaeftemie, as well as a bunch of other (sometimes slightly modified) band logos and art. Price tag: $1,600. Most of you have probably noticed this fashion trend of recycling/stealing metal imagery.
So… Fashion or total rip-off? What do you think?
EDIT: to my knowledge, none of this art was licensed. Super Bad?!?!”
