Appearing at Variety‘s recent Music for Screens summit in Los Angeles, CA, Nine Inch NailsTrent Reznor spoke of the decline of record stores and how he misses the collective experience that those outlets once had for generations of people.

“I lament the death of record stores, as an old person. I miss there being a place that is about the celebration of music. You walk into Amoeba it feels like the people who work there probably listen to, and like, music.

You can tell by the character of the room you’re in a kind of church for music. Where it’s music, it’s not something else and music—it’s not dishwashers—it’s music, you know?

I’m kind of sad to see that disappear into… I guess the concert venue is where that happens now, to a degree. I don’t get that feeling walking into Guitar Center—maybe, but not quite the same.

I hadn’t really thought about; I enjoy going to see films and I try to as much as I can and I like getting out of my head and being in a room. And I like seeing it with other people, and I like the feeling of the collective experience.”

Variety also talked with Reznor and his Nine Inch Nails bandmate Atticus Ross prior to the event as well, you can read more of that here.
