A report over at Sacramento’s KCRA has word that the attack that left Slaves guitarist Alex Lyman and two other musicians in the hospital with stab and slashing wounds has been classified as a hate crime. The suspect, Timothy Brownell, was originally arrested on charges of assault with a deadly weapon, and has since posted bond.

The Sacramento Police Department have now issued a new warrant for Brownwell, with a new charge of the attack being a hate crime. The classification comes from the victim’s claims that they were attacked for wearing ‘skinny jeans’ and that Brownwell made homophobic slurs towards them before attacking them.

Newsreview.com have shed more light on the incident. Along with Lyman, Musical Charis members Blake Abbey and Bradley Abbey and another member of Slaves, Wes Richmond, were walking arm-in-arm when two males began shouting obscenities at them, remarking on their skinny jeans and calling them “faggots.” After a brief verbal altercation, Brownwell is said to have begun slicing and stabbing the individuals.

Blake recently underwent surgery as a result of Brownwell‘s knife going all the way through his arm Non-life-threatening injuries were sustained by the others involved, with Richmond apparently suffering a broken hand. Blake said of the aftermath of the altercation:

“I’m really, really fucking bummed. I’m going to have thousands and thousands of dollars in medical bills, and this dude stabbed three people and he’s already out of jail.”
