Blackgazers Deafheaven have surprise released their new EP “At Work In The Fields Of The Bomb“. The existence of this new 3-song outing of course isn’t out of left field, considering that the band recently began selling copies of it early. They also began debuting new material from it live earlier this month.
Guitarist Kerry McCoy told Binaural last month that this new effort is, “the heaviest thing we’ve ever released.” He went on to state that, “It’s definitely the closest thing to black metal we’ve ever done.” You can now judge for yourself if that description was true. As for the title of this effort, a press release offered:
”At Work in the Fields of the Bomb‘ borrows its title and central concept from Robert Del Tredici’s photo book documenting the ordinary places and people involved in the production of nuclear weapons. The EP explores the unsettling contrast between the unimaginable consequences of the bomb and the mundane actions that make such destruction possible, focusing on the choices and systems that lead us toward irreversible moments. It considers how catastrophe can emerge from seemingly ordinary details—and how, once extinction becomes possible, there is ultimately no one left to witness it.’
