Soulfly‘s set yesterday, October 04th, at the closing date of this year’s ‘Aftershock‘ festival in Sacramento, CA featured a special guest. Jakobe Moreno, son of Deftones, etc. vocalist/guitarist Chino Moreno, filled in for his father on the song “Pain“.
That track, taken from Soulfly‘s sophomore album “Primitive“, was one of a pair of tracks Chino joined Soulfly in the studio for in the late 90s/early aughts, both of which referenced the passing of Soulfly vocalist/guitarist Max Cavalera‘s stepson, Dana Wells. Wells passed away in a 1996 car accident, reportedly while being pursued by gang members. Chino is said to have become friends with Max through Dana.
Jakobe has been involved with several bands over the years, including Death Rogen, who have played ‘Aftershock‘ in the past. Gloria Cavalera, wife of Max, said of yesterday’s onstage pairing on social media:
“Today at the ‘Aftershock Festival‘ Soulfly invited Jakobe Moreno, Chino Moreno from the Deftones’ son. He filled in on his dad‘s part on the track Pain. Hot damn! What a voice! He rolled that track up perfectly. It was an epic moment! When Chino’s son was born, Dana told me someday he’s going to play with Zyon. And Dana was right because there was Zyon right behind Kobe on the drums. Legendary moment.”
