Brand new Mastodon music is upon us, with the GRAMMY Award-winning sludge metallers having just launched their brand new single, “Your Ghost Again“. Of course this track’s arrival is a bit of a bittersweet event, given that it finds the band moving on from their Brent Hinds era. The latter guitarist/vocalist and the band had a rocky split in early 2025, with Hinds later passing away in August of last year in a motorcycle accident.
The band’s drummer/vocalist Brann Dailor has revealed this track to be a tribute to Hinds, stating of it:
“For me, ‘Your Ghost Again‘ is about when you lose somebody that’s close to you that you existed with for most of your life—or your whole life. It’s those moments when you’re in those familiar places that you’ve always been with that person, and then, after they’re gone, you see them out of the corner of your eye, and it makes you sad because they’re not there. When we were in the studio recording, I kept seeing Brent. I’d see him on my right holding the guitar because that’s where he’d usually be.
It’s the same with my mom: I keep seeing her. And you get a little jolt of excitement because you think you’re actually seeing them, but then you remember they’re not here and it takes you down a notch. So, it’s these big relationships for me that became the subject matter of the song. I was just singing about what I was seeing, and I was seeing ghosts.”
This new track is expected to serve as the lead single to the band’s forthcoming ninth studio album, which they’ve already wrapped up the bulk of work on. Production credits on this track list the band as co-producers alongside Patrik Berger (Taylor Swift, Show Me The Body) and Converge guitarist Kurt Ballou.
Song credits also confirm that this song features playing and writing contributions the group’s latest additions, namely guitarist Nick Johnston and keyboardist João Nogueira. It also finds the band teamed with Loma Vista Recordings after years on Reprise. Fans of Mastodon should also keep their eyes peeled this Tuesday, June 02nd, with word a new headlining tour expected to drop.
Thus far an admat for that North American run, ‘The Poisonous Weapons Tour‘, has emerged online via mastodonrocks.com with blackgazers Deafheaven and French post-black metal outfit Alcest set to open.
