It would seem that the ‘GRAMMY Awards‘ also omitted another heavy music icon during their in memoriam segment this past Sunday, February 01st. Outside of the glaring omission of Mastodon‘s Brent Hinds, himself a previous GRAMMY Award winner, it seems that Limp Bizkit bassist Sam Rivers also wasn’t mentioned during the broadcast. Rivers passed away on October 18th, 2025 at the age of 48. His cause of death was not publicly disclosed.
Despite Limp Bizkit‘s significant impact on pop culture in the late 90s and early 00s, the multi-platinum nü-metal band never managed to secure a GRAMMY for themselves. They were however nominated several times, with “Significant Other” landing a nod for ‘Best Rock Album’ and “Nookie” being up for ‘Best Hard Rock Performance’ back in 2000. A year later the group scored their third unsuccessful nomination, with their ‘Mission: Impossible 2‘ theme song “Take A Look Around” having been up for ‘Best Hard Rock Performance’.
Fans of the nü-metal band and their late bassist have since taken to social media to voice their disapproval of Rivers‘ apparent omission. Numerous musicians and industry executives, etc. were shown on the display behind the respective in memoriam tribute performances this year, which included an all-star sendoff for Ozzy Osbourne.
However, frequent cuts and a prolonged focus on the performers left open the possibility that some late artists displayed were given little to no screen time on the televised broadcast. Rivers‘ passing is noted on The Recording Academy‘s in memoriam database.
Regardless, the GRAMMYS have had a long history of overlooking late musicians from the metal and hard rock world over the years, with these two names joining a litany of past omissions from the televised broadcast that includes:
Vinnie Paul (Pantera/HELLYEAH)
Jeff Hanneman (Slayer)
Joey Jordison (VIMIC, ex-Slipknot, etc.)
Wayne Static (Static-X)
Nick Menza (Megadeth)
Oli Herbert (All That Remains)
Oderus Urungus (aka Dave Brockie) (GWAR)
