In an exciting development for the cult of Patton, Mr. Bungle performed their 1999 track “Retrovertigo” last night, January 15th. That surprise setlist addition came about during their show at the Teatro Estudio Cavaret in Zapopan, Mexico. Since reuniting in 2019, the avant-garde metal outfit have largely stuck to their early thrash metal offerings.
That decision to essentially wall off the 90s body of work that found them drawing considerable acclaim has been a thorny issue for some of their fanbase. While it’s unclear what brought about this change, last night’s trip down memory lane marked the first time Mr. Bungle had played that song live since 2000.
Mr. Bungle are currently touring Latin America as openers for Avenged Sevenfold, a band whom themselves covered “Retrovertigo“ back in 2017. At the time, the multi-platinum alternative metal band described themselves as “massive fans of Mr. Bungle.”
Some fan-filmed footage of “Retrovertigo” from last night’s set can be found below. While this marks the first time Mr. Bungle have played the track in decades, vocalist Mike Patton did revisit the song live back in 2019 during a Mondo Cane show.
