Mastodon‘s set at the ‘Release Athens‘ festival in Piraeus, Greece today, July 23rd, found the progressive sludge metal band honoring the late Ozzy Osbourne. The Atlanta, GA natives busted out their recently debuted cover of Black Sabbath‘s “Supernaut” during that set in honor of the Prince Of Darkness.

Mastodon first rolled out that tribute during their time onstage at this month’s July 05th ‘Back To The Beginning‘ concert in Birmingham, UK, which served as the final live sendoff for Black Sabbath and Osbourne. With the tragic passing of Osbourne yesterday, July 22nd, the metal community has found itself in a state of mourning for the beloved godfather of the genre.

Mastodon bassist/vocalist Troy Sanders addressed the audience before this second airing of their the cover today, he stated [transcribed by theprp.com]:

“We’d like to pay our respects to Black Sabbath. We’ll play a song for Mr. Ozzy Osbourne. Without them there is no Mastodon. Without Black Sabbath, without Ozzy, there is a lot of none of this. So let’s turn sadness into a celebration for about five minutes, Mastodon in Athens, Greece. One song from Black Sabbath, ok? This is a number they called “Supernaut“.
