Ex-Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Josh Klinghoffer will not be facing jail time over the vehicular manslaughter charge leveled against him last year. Klinghoffer, who more recently has served as a touring guitarist with Pearl Jam, was charged with vehicular manslaughter without gross negligence back in August of 2024.

That charge was filed against him for being behind the wheel of an SUV that struck and killed Israel Sanchez at a crosswalk in Alhambra, CA on March 18th, 2024. This past September, Klinghoffer entered a not guilty plea in response to the charge.

Per court proceedings that took place today, May 28th, 2025, Klinghoffer has accepted a no-jail plea deal. Rolling Stone report that, Klinghoffer pleaded no contest to the that charge per the deal. In turn, he will be sentenced to one year of informal probation and 60 days of community labor. He must also complete a driver safety class and pay restitution still to be determined at a later date.

Sanchez’s daughter Ashley was in attendance at the court and gave a victim impact statement that directly addressed Klinghoffer, telling him that he had caused “deep and lasting trauma” to her family.

Ashley remains locked in legal action against Klinghoffer via a civil wrongful death lawsuit. That suit has been amended after facing several challenges thus far. Per a hearing this past January, a judge denied Ashley the opportunity to seek punitive damages.

The judge ruled at the time that Klinghoffer‘s actions did not provably constitute “willful and conscious disregard” for the safety of others. The next hearing in that civil case will take place July 01st.
