Maynard James Keenan Looks Back At 61: "I Think Legacy, In A Way, Is Hindsight. You Just Do."

This Thursday, April 24th, will see the next leg of Maynard James Keenan‘s 60ish birthday live celebration, the ‘Sessanta v2.0 Tour‘, kick off in Palm Springs, CA. First staged back in 2024 around his then 60th birthday, the newly turned 61-year-old Keenan (his birthday was April 17th) will once again be out fronting his bands A Perfect Circle and Puscifer on that run.

Primus are also part of the bill, which somewhat uniquely finds members of all three bands interchanging throughout the night, delivering unique renditions of each other’s songs. That unconventional approach to a three-band bill once again promises a memorable experience, however, not everyone has been onboard with the concept.

In a new interview with rvamag.com, Keenan spoke on how he views the resistance and criticism that comes with defying the norm with this trek:

“Generally, people who are open to creativity have been fairly positive. There are always negative people in everything—nothing’s ever good enough, and it isn’t what they wanted. I’m doing everything I can, and if it’s not good enough for you, go find someone else who’s doing it better. Please do that—and fuck off.”

While the success afforded to him from fronting alternative metal chart-toppers Tool has likely been enough to allow him to comfortably rest on his laurels , Keenan‘s grounded sense of drive and ambition has instead seen him perpetually remain in motion throughout his career.

Whether it be his numerous business ventures, his black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, or fronting several bands, the pragmatic and sometimes cryptic musician thusly has a unique view on his legacy. When asked by the above-mentioned publication how he looks back at all that he’s created during his time on this earth, he responded:

“I think legacy, in a way, is hindsight. You just do. You try to make sure that you are—but sometimes you lose track of that. I think you just have to do what’s right for each situation as it approaches you. When you’re recording a record. When you’re playing a show. When you’re making wine. You can’t go on autopilot, right? It comes from consistency and hitting the mark.”

As for what he feels has been the most transformative for him over the years then, he responded:

“It’s surrounding yourself with intelligent people who aren’t just yes men. Having a solid family and friend base. They’re not just paid friends, if that makes sense. I think it’s having somebody who can give you an honest opinion, which is invaluable—somebody who doesn’t risk losing their job by saying it out loud.”

He continued:

“…Staying grounded isn’t easy when you have extravagant things being thrown at you all the time. So having friends around who aren’t living in that crazy, perverted reality is important.”
