Prior to his untimely passing in 2018, the late Pantera, HELLYEAH, etc. drumming great Vinnie Paul Abbott had been hoping to publish a cooking book based on his favorite family recipes. An extension of his ‘Sunday Funday’ dinner tradition, he began work on the book over 15 years ago. He even decided on a title and cover idea for it back in 2015, offering:
“My cookbook will be called ‘Drumming Up an Appetite With Vinnie Paul‘. How clever is that? It’s got a picture of me sitting behind a drum set. I’m holding two turkey legs, which are otherwise known as drum sticks!”
“It’s all about cooking and having fun with it. A lot of people think cooking is throwing something in the microwave. It’s something that you’ve really got to be passionate about, just like playing an instrument. If you put your heart and soul into it, and then you feed it to people, and you’re [like], ‘Oh, man! This is so good.’ It makes you feel good. It’s just like playing music; [people say] ‘G-damn, I love this sh*t!'”
Now, years removed from his death, his dream has been made a reality, with that book now fittingly being published today, March 11th (Abbott himself was born on this day back in 1964. )Comedian Carrot Top — a personal friend of Abbott‘s — provided the foreword for this book, which is broken up into three chapters ‘Reinventing The Meal‘ (main courses), ‘Far Beyond Kitchen‘ (side dishes) and “A Vulgar Display Of Flour‘ (desserts.)
Abbott‘s personal assistant Brian “Bridog” Jones was also involved in helping get this book published. He stated:
“Vinnie’s BBQ action was most definitely not your average line up whether it be at his Texas or Vegas casas, or on the road prepping and cooking for all the bands and crew and even the local venue personnel, his spread was legendary! Lots of very hard work from myself and many others made this book possible. Vinnie’s recipes are now being offered to the world!”
