While this past September’s public implosion of Jane’s Addiction tainted what was intended to be a celebrated return from the multi-platinum alternative rockers, it hasn’t spelled the end of the group’s extracurricular pursuits.
Less than a year ago, the classic lineup of vocalist Perry Farrell, guitarist Dave Navarro, bassist Eric Avery and drummer Stephen Perkins were finally able to reunite, laying down their first new songs together in nearly 35 years.
While two new singles “Imminent Redemption” and “True Love” did emerge to further the band’s career, troubled live performances and growing tensions ultimately saw the band meltdown in real-time onstage in Boston, MA on September 13th, ending their relatively short-lived reunion in an onstage physical fight.
It was a sad end to the band as a creative force, but the legacy of the band lives on via a newly announced merch drop with American clothing brand Supreme. The latter streetwear company said the following of this collab:
‘American rock band Jane’s Addiction is credited with kickstarting the mainstream alternative rock era that came to define the 1990s.
Jane’s Addiction was formed by Perry Farrell and Eric Avery in Los Angeles in 1985. After unsuccessful starts with multiple guitarists and drummers, Jane’s Addiction crystalized when Avery’s sister suggested her then-boyfriend, 18-year-old drummer Stephen Perkins. Perkins in turn recruited his former marching band-mate, guitarist Dave Navarro. The band came up through the city’s underground club scene, regularly headlining at the Scream.
At the height of the hair metal craze, Jane’s Addiction forged a hybrid sound that drew from disparate rhythmic influences – metal, goth, funk, folk, punk, heady psych rock, tribal drumming. Lyrically, Farrell crafted stories of L.A.’s gritty underbelly, shot through with his own spiritual musings.
In 1987, Jane’s Addiction debuted with a self-titled live recording from the Roxy – they released it independently, but had already inked a lucrative deal with Warner Bros. after a high-profile bidding war. That initial studio album, Nothing’s Shocking, arrived in 1988, and has since been heralded as the first truly mainstream alternative rock album. Ritual de lo Habitual, the band’s 1990 follow-up, is considered its creative and commercial breakthrough. With “Stop” and “Been Caught Stealing,” Jane’s Addiction shepherded the underground to the charts.
