Tim Lambesis & Jake Luhrs

As I Lay Dying’s Tim Lambesis Thanks August Burns Red’s Jake Luhrs For Standing By Him: “He Largely Gains Criticism When He Does Something With Me”

Tim Lambesis, vocalist for As I Lay Dying, Born Through Fire and Austrian Death Machine, has issued a personal thanks to his friend Jake Luhrs, vocalist of fellow metalcore outfit August Burns Red. Outside of traveling in similar musical circles, both As I Lay Dying and August Burns Red came up in the Christian metalcore scene. The two outfits would soften their stances on being outwardly faith-based over the years however.

Infamously, Tim Lambesis would find himself in prison after entering a guilty plea to a charge of solicitation of another to commit murder back in 2013. Lambesis had unwittingly hired an undercover detective posing as a hitman to murder his wife at the time. Lambesis would go on to spend two years in prison on his six-year sentence before being paroled in December of 2016.

Lambesis would seemingly go on to turn over a new leaf in the time around his parole, having been certified as an addiction treatment counselor, while also focusing on academic studies in social work. The years that followed his release saw Lambesis reconcile with his estranged bandmates in As I Lay Dying for a run that lasted several years, before ultimately going sideways.

Despite the controversy, Luhrs has remained an advocate for Lambesis since his return to the public eye. It was LuhrsHeartSupport organization that released a mini-documentary on Lambesis and As I Lay Dying‘s reunion titled ‘Misery Evolving‘ back in 2019.

A portion of proceeds from the early legs of As I Lay Dying‘s reunion touring would also go towards HeartSupport. Luhrs even guested on As I Lay Dying‘s 2019 comeback album “Shaped By Fire“, appearing on the track “Redefined“.

Luhrs‘ steadfast support for Lambesis hasn’t been without consequence though. Lambesis‘ initial return back to the music world following his incarceration has and continues to remain a divisive topic. Several of As I Lay Dying‘s reunion shows were canceled in the face of public outcry of Lambesis‘ criminal past.

Given his public support for Lambesis, Luhrs has faced his own share of criticism. Acknowledging that in a post thanking Luhrs for his friendship, Lambesis shared the following yesterday, April 21st:

“One reason I know @jakeluhrsabr is truly a good friend that cares about healing and wellbeing is because he gains nothing by being associated with me. In fact, he largely gains criticism when he does something with me. I’m truly thankful for Jake’s friendship and his attitude of doing what he wants to do regardless of societal pressures.

Jake performed the song Redefined with me/AILD in Germany a couple weeks ago and it felt just like his performance on the album!”

Luhrs replied directly to the post, offering:

“Thanks for the kind words, bro. So good to see you and thanks for having me on stage, that was a blast! Them flames will get ya sweating 😂”
