Tool’s Justin Chancellor Says Age Is Becoming A Factor With New Music: “There’s No Thought Of Taking 13 Years If We’re Gonna Do It”

As we approach four years since Tool ended their 13-year drought of new music with 2019’s “Fear Inoculum“, the desire for more new music from the multi-platinum alternative metal favs continues to build. Last fall saw Justin Chancellor, who plays bass for the acclaimed group, express his hopes for a quicker turnaround on album #6.

In a recently published interview with Metal Hammer, Chancellor has reaffirmed those plans and commented on where the group are now:

Danny [Carey, Tool drummer] is 62 now, so there’s no thought of taking 13 years if we’re gonna do it. We’re gonna have to be more efficient, and we’ve been talking of ways that we can do that. Maybe taking a leaf out of how me and Peter [Mohamed, Justin’s bandmate in side project MTVoid] work with MTVoid – instead of staring at each other going ‘Come on! Get it out of ya!’ maybe we could do a bit more at home. We’ll see!”

He continued:

“We put a little work in before this tour. We gave it a stab for a couple of months. We ended up compiling all the ideas we had; normally when we do that we start writing pretty soon after, but we had a lot of stuff coming up, so we didn’t dive all the way in. When we’re done with Europe, we’re gonna dive back in during the second half of the year.”

While the wear and tear on Carey from his demanding drum performances can be considered a factor, he’s not the only member of the acclaimed group to have had to potentially alter his live approach. Vocalist Maynard James Keenan admitted last spring that he’s had to scale back the more demanding material from the band’s earlier days in order to consistently perform well on tour.

While Carey has already crossed the threshold into his 60s, Keenan will join him this year on April 17th. The latter has plans for an elaborate 60th birthday tour already booked. Guitarist Adam Jones will join his bandmates in that age bracket in January of next year, while Chancellor will turn 53 this November.
