Kanye West Pulls Uncleared Sample Of “Iron Man” From His New Song “Carnival” After Public Condemnation From Ozzy Osbourne And Co.

Yesterday (February 09th) saw Ozzy Osbourne and his wife Sharon Osbourne publicly condemn rapper Kanye West for including an uncleared sample of a Black Sabbath track on a song titled “Carnival” that was headed for his then unreleased album, “Vultures 1“. That record, a collaboration between West and Ty Dolla $ign, ultimately arrived online last night, but was first aired amid a listening party event in Chicago, IL.

In light of the Ozzy‘s condemnation, and presumably not wanting to face the legal ramifications, West, who was previously denied clearance for the sample from the Osbourne camp, ultimately relented and pulled the sample.

While originally identified by Ozzy as a 1983 live performance Black Sabbath‘s “War Pigs“, he later clarified that it was a live cover of Sabbath‘s “Iron Man” as performed by Osbourne‘s solo band in 1983 that was used.

Osbourne‘s revised statement made on the matter yesterday read:

“@KANYEWEST ASKED PERMISSION TO SAMPLE A SECTION OF A 1983 LIVE PERFORMANCE OF “IRON MAN” FROM THE US FESTIVAL WITHOUT VOCALS & WAS REFUSED PERMISSION BECAUSE HE IS AN ANTISEMITE AND HAS CAUSED UNTOLD HEARTACHE TO MANY. HE WENT AHEAD AND USED THE SAMPLE ANYWAY AT HIS ALBUM LISTENING PARTY LAST NIGHT. I WANT NO ASSOCIATION WITH THIS MAN!”

Sharon later indicated publicly that legal action was being considered against West for the move, stating that their team had spoken with representatives for West over the matter. The track at the heart of the controversy is titled “Carnival” and ultimately was officially released without the offending sample included.

West has become an increasingly divisive figure over the years in light of numerous allegations of antisemitism for his polarizing comments over the years. Speaking to Billboard yesterday, Osbourne, who is of Jewish descent, commented:

“…The simple thing is, we don’t want to be associated with a hate. To spread hate the way he does, it shouldn’t be allowed. All the excuses – he’s bipolar or whatever – doesn’t change that. It’s like, fuck you, basically.”

Prior to this increasingly erratic and controversial behavior, West obtained clearance for the usage of “Iron Man” on his 2010 track “Hell Of A Life“. Amid a listening party held for “Vultures 1” last night in Long Island, NY, West and Ty Dolla $ign subbed out “Carnival” and instead played “Hell Of A Life” in its place.

In a further ironic twist, last Halloween saw the Osbourne‘s dress-up as West and his wife Bianca Censori. Sharon told Billboard yesterday that her and her husband’s decision to do so was a “joke” and not a sign of support.
