Melvins Enlist Roy Mayorga & More For New Album “Tarantula Heart”, Debut “Working The Ditch” Video

Sludgy alternative metal band Melvins will be dropping album #27 this April. They’ve titled that opus “Tarantula Heart” and are set to release it on April 19th via Ipecac Recordings. The song “Working The Ditch” is the first to make its way out from the 5-song opus. A video for it was overseen by Jesse Nieminen, who previously worked with the group on their ‘A Walk With Love And Death‘ film.

In a bit of a throwback to their past lineups, drummer Roy Mayorga (Ministry, Stone Sour) was invited into the fold for these sessions, performing alongside the band’s own Dale Crover. Vocalist/guitarist Buzz Osborne commented:

“The way we approached ‘Tarantula Heart‘ was different than any other Melvins’ album. I had Dale and Roy Mayorga come in and play along with Steven and I to some riffs, then I took those sessions and figured out what parts would work and wrote new music to fit. This isn’t a studio approach we’ve ever taken. Usually we have the songs written BEFORE we start recording!”

Crover added:

“The majority of ‘Tarantula Heart‘ has dual drum parts. Roy is an amazing drummer. We would discuss what we would do pattern wise, then we’d just go for it. Improvising riffs and trading off on drum fills.”

Osborne continued:

“When the rest of the band heard these songs I’d created from the sessions, they were blown away. These were fully developed new songs that they’d never heard before that had seemingly appeared out of thin air. Presto!”

Sessions for the effort once again took place under co-producer Toshi Kasai, who also assumed the mixing duties. Outside of Mayorga, We Are The Asteroid guitarist Gary Chester also appears on this record.
