Florida Man Plays Guitar During Brain SurgeryUHealth

A Guitarist Recently Played System Of A Down & Deftones Songs Amid His Brain Tumor Surgery

A Florida-based musician by the name of Christian Nolen recently spent a portion of his brain tumor removal surgery playing songs from nü-metal stars System Of A Down & Sacramento, CA alternative metal band Deftones on a guitar. That surgery took place at the University of Miami’s Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Nolen was encouraged to stay alert for a portion of the procedure (an ‘awake craniotomy’), opting to perform songs from the aforementioned bands to pass the time. Having a patient play guitar during surgical procedures of this nature isn’t entirely uncommon — doctors tend to order some form of physical activity to help assess the impact the surgery has to the manual dexterity of the patient as they are operating.

That being the case, it’s certainly not the first time a patient has played guitar during said surgery. But it may be the first time songs from the aforementioned two bands were played amid such a procedure.

WSVN report that Nolen continues to recover post-operation, with treatments and therapy still planned. You can watch the report they filed on the matter below:
