Serj Tankian Reveals His Choices For The Best Introductory System Of A Down Songs

System Of A Down vocalist Serj Tankian was recently asked by Revolver which tracks he feels would serve as the best introduction to the music of the aforementioned multi-platinum alternative metal outfit. The obvious choice would of course be the band’s defining hit “Chop Suey!“, which itself has gone on to rack up 5x multi-platinum status in the United States alone, racking up billions of streams. Launched as the first single from the group’s 6x multi-platinum sophomore album “Toxicity“, that track firmly cemented the group’s career.

However, its follow-up singles “Toxicity” and “Aerials” were no slouches either, notching respective 3x multi-platinum and 2x multi-platinum certifications on their own. When pressed for his choices by Revolver, Tankian did mention the above trio of tracks, but also snuck in a later cut: 2005’s “B.Y.O.B“, the first single from “Mezmerize“.

Here’s his reply:

“It really depends on what their musical flavor is. If they’re a pop person that you don’t want to freak out, then you might want to play ‘Aerials.’

But if they’re someone that likes different types of music, [who are] open to many, many different types of music, then you play them something crazier or heavier.

I think [for] most people, either ‘B.Y.O.B.,’ ‘Toxicity‘ or ‘Chop Suey!‘ seem to be their entry drug to System Of A Down. That seems to be the way they get their foot in the door, so I guess one of those maybe.”
