The Smashing Pumpkins were guests on ‘The Howard Stern Show‘ earlier this week. In addition to delivering live performances of their gold-certified single “1979“, and the more recent “Empires“, the diamond-certified alternative rockers’ nucleus Billy Corgan also took part in various discussions with Stern. You can watch some of the highlights shared from that appearance below.

At one point the conversation drifted towards the various criticism and adversity vocalist/guitarist Billy Corgan has faced throughout his decades in the music industry. When Stern played a clip of the band’s 1994 single “Disarm” from the band’s 1993 4x multi-platinum sophomore album “Siamese Dream“, Corgan offered:

“…I’m the guy who wrote that song. I’m the guy who arranged those strings. I did that song when I was about 25-years-old, and it was a big hit song. Not once after that song did anybody in my life—anybody—pull me in a room and say ‘can you give me more of that?’ …Not one time did anybody sit me down and say ‘can you write me more of those songs.’

They were like ‘give me more of the ones that sell sausages.’ You understand? ‘Bullet With Butterfly Wings‘… was [me] saying ‘you want me to be this rat in the cage, here I am.’ Here’s the dumb beat, here’s the big rock chorus, and it was a big hit.

And they were like ‘great, give me more of that.’ And to this day, and by the way, that’s like what, 28 years ago? To this day, the fans, god bless ’em, and the critics are still asking for more of the rat in the cage stuff. They aren’t asking for this guy [who wrote ‘Disarm‘.]”

The appearance took place yesterday, March 28th. Yesterday also saw the reveal of a new track titled “Spellbinding” from the outfit, as well as the announcement of a summer North American headlining tour with Interpol, Stone Temple Pilots and Rival Sons. You can check all that out here.
