Fresh off of the December 09th release of their first EP since 2014, Crosses (†††) have shared another cover online. That duo of Chino Moreno (Deftones) and Shaun Lopez (Far) have made it a tradition of sorts to unveil a cover around the holiday season, having broken their years of silence on Christmas Eve doing so back in 2020.
he group returned with their cover of Cause & Effect‘s 1990 track “The Beginning Of The End” on December 24th of that year. They continued the trend last year, with December 23rd seeing the launch of their cover of the late Q Lazzarus‘ “Goodbye Horses“.
This year’s holiday treat is a cover of George Michael‘s 1987 single “One More Try“. That track was the fifth single to be released from the late pop star’s diamond-certified 1987 album “Faith“, with the song going on to be certified gold itself.
Moreno commented to NME of the cover:
“Doing these covers is what helped us to get the project up and running again. Our Cause & Effect cover was the first thing we did back and it inspired us to keep going. This year, we chose to cover George Michael’s ‘One More Try’ because we always talked about it.”
“One day, in my inbox, I got a demo of the music from Shaun. In my head, I was like, ‘I’m never going to be able to sing this because it’s George Michael and hard to do well’. I wanted to do it for real and it didn’t sound too bad. I’m pretty proud of it. It’s weird when you’re singing someone else’s song. I don’t know if I’d go for a vocal that high on my own as it’s right at the top of my comfort zone.”
Lopez added:
“It’s not what people are going to expect us to put out, and I like that. Maybe next year we’ll do a metal tune.”
With Crosses having just recently issued six new songs in the form of “PERMANENT.RADIANT“, they’ve already set their sights on the future with more new music currently in the works.
