Korn’s Band Assistant Discusses Running The Teleprompter For Jonathan Davis At Live Shows

Brian “Head” Welch, guitarist of multi-platinum nü-metal pioneers Korn, has been shining a spotlight on the people behind the scenes who make the band’s live shows possible. He’s taken to calling that series “All In The Family“—which of course refers to one of the band’s most hated songs in the band’s arsenal. In the below episode, Welch talks with Scott Sheppard, who serves as the band’s assistant—a role he graduated to after originally starting out on the band’s street team in the early 2000s.

Among his various tasks is running the teleprompter for the group’s vocalist Jonathan Davis. With a catalog fourteen albums deep, it’s no surprise that Davis need a little help in keeping the lyrics for all of the various songs straight. Davis has also been known to use an oxygen tank onstage to help his performances over the years as well.

Speaking of the teleprompter, Sheppard stated:

“I run the teleprompter for Jon. It’s not a secret; I mean, you can clearly see it. It’s out there on stage. But when you have 14 albums and you’ve written hundreds of songs… [Welch went on to say that Jon likes having ‘notes’.] Shephard added, “When you’re rocking out, you’re not standing still the whole time—you’re walking around, jumping up and down—every once in a while you wanna just see where you are in the song. So that’s my job.”

When asked if Davis has ever messed up due to being fed the wrong lyrics, Sheppard replied:

“It happens, but honestly, it’s very rare. And I don’t know if it’s because… Since I personally know all the songs, it’s really easy for me to follow along. Other people, if they just jumped in the spot and they didn’t know the songs at all, yeah, I could imagine it’d be very difficult.”

When asked if there was any repercussions for a past screwup, he revealed that Davis merely gave him a “side eye.”
