Live event trade publication Pollstar are celebrating their 40th anniversary by publishing several new charts, including a pair that aim to establish the 150 ‘Top Touring Artists’ based on data Pollstar have collected from box office reports since 1980. Utilizing said data, they have put out two variants of the ‘Top Touring Artists Of The Pollstar Era’ chart, which despite its name, also finds a few festival tours included.
The data was presented in two separate charts sorted by box office gross and tickets sold. When it came to the top 3 of ‘Top Touring Artists Of The Pollstar Era: Boxoffice Grosses’ chart, The Rolling Stones stood supreme with a gross of $2,165,280,638 from 22,137,799 tickets sold. U2 and Elton John rounded out the top 3. However, when it came to the most tickets sold, U2 topped the list with 26,178,043 tickets sold.
Various metal and hard rock acts also placed on the lists, including thrash metal legends Metallica, who cracked it the top ten at #9, just ahead of Paul McCartney.
