By now you’re likely aware of Metallica‘s music being featured in the season 4 finale of Netflix‘s hit series, ‘Stranger Things‘. The thrash legends’ involvement came about via the show’s beloved metalhead character Eddie Munson. The song can be heard amid a *spoiler* guitar battle scene in which Munson (played by actor Joseph Quinn) performs the band’s 1986 track “Master Of Puppets” to distract the evil forces of the series villain Vecna.
Since the episode aired earlier this month, the aforementioned Metallica track has rocketed up the charts. It’s also been revealed that ‘Stranger Things‘ creators The Duffer Brothers penned the scene with with the aforementioned Metallica song in mind.
As it turns out, most of what you saw in the episode was Quinn himself. The actor revealed he has been playing guitar since he was young and spent months practicing the revered title track to Metallica‘s 1986 album to get his parts down. However, Quinn did mention that he didn’t perform the actual solo parts as seen in the episode, telling the Radio Times that the series had to fly in a ‘black belt metal guitarist to help with that.’
Below you can check out some footage of Quinn rehearsing the track behind the scenes. The actual version of the song heard in the episode is an updated take featuring some additional guitar tracking from Tye Trujillo (OTTTO, Suicidal Tendencies), son of Metallica bassist/vocalist Robert Trujillo.
Metallica spoke of their music being included in the series last week, offering in part, “It’s an incredible honor to be such a big part of Eddie’s journey and to once again be keeping company with all of the other amazing artists featured in the show..”
