Tool, Etc. Frontman Maynard James Keenan On The Negative Impact Of Social Media: “It’s Very Comfortable From Your Living Room To Run Your Mouth”

Maynard James Keenan, the enigmatic vocalist at the front of the likes of multi-platinum alternative metal oufits Tool and A Perfect Circle and the experimental rock group Puscifer, recently gave an interview to azcentral.com ahead of Puscifer‘s spring/summer U.S. tour.

In it he spoke on various topics, including two more livestream PPV events Puscifer already have filmed and plan to edit for future releases. He also stated that the group have yet to get back to writing new material.

The discussion also found Keenan weighing in on the impact social media has had on humanity as a whole and how it has enabled some ugly habits that aren’t as common when talking to people face to face. He spoke of that as follows:

“I don’t want to be the old dude blaming the new stuff. But that really is part of the issue. Social media technology. And the isolation of being able to voice every uninformed opinion that you’ve ever had or come across. I don’t know if there’s any way out until somehow it all gets unplugged for a reset.”

He continued:

“It’s very comfortable from your living room to run your mouth. But when you actually have to see the situations in real time or have to talk to the person across from you, we tend to be a bit more civil. You might be the big tough guy, but eventually there’s a bigger tougher guy who doesn’t agree with you. So at some point, you’re sort of going, ‘OK, maybe we should be cool to each other instead of running our mouths.'”

Later in the chat, Keenan revealed he came home from Tool‘s recently wrapped European spring tour with an unwanted gift: his fourth go-around with COVID-19. Keenan had a particularly tough battle with COVID-19 early on in 2020, suffering lingering lung damage and lasting problems with inflammation.

Thankfully for Keenan, his latest bout with it was comparatively mild. He relayed of that: “I just had it the fourth time. I got the European-flavored one. That was fun. It was a flu. It’s done.”
