Mastodon guitarist/vocalist Brent Hinds and High On Fire & Sleep vocalist/guitarist Matt Pike have been collaborative in the past, having previously teamed up for a promotional spot. That wasn’t the full extent of their pairing however, as the duo have chosen to pursue a new project together.

Appearing recently on Hatebreed, etc. frontman Jamey Jasta‘s “The Jasta Show‘ podcast, Hinds stated of their new venture:

“I wrote way more songs that I chose not to put on the [new Mastodon] album because me and Matt Pike are starting a band together and we’re gonna work an album up and I’m gonna use a lot of that stuff for that. I kinda held back on purpose.”

Hinds described the material as being heavy, trippy and bluesy and the pair intend to shoot a music video for a new single around December/January. In the same podcast appearance, Hinds also spoke of his disdain for touring with Disturbed back on the 2008 ‘Rockstar Energy Mayhem Festival‘.

Slipknot headlined that particular run, while Disturbed were the second highest billed act on the trek. Mastodon themselves were openers on the main stage. When Jasta asked Hinds whether or not he had any bucket list tours he wanted to do, he replied:

“No. I did a lot of tours I didn’t want to do though, like Disturbed and all that Mayhem stupid bullshit. Gay ass shit. You gotta fuckin’ open up for Disturbed. You gotta play to people that like Disturbed.

When asked if Disturbed fans were receptive to Mastodon, he replied:

“It was the ‘Mayhem Fest‘, you know, just a fuckin’ bunch of drunk Americans. They’re receptive to anything, I imagine. There’s tons of tours I want to do, but there’s most tours… our first tour for Relapse was with Dying Fetus and some other fucking band. It was horrible. I didn’t want to do that tour.”

Mastodon‘s eighth studio album “Hushed & Grim” was released last week.
