Several weeks back it was reported that there had been an uproar about Cannibal Corpse frontman George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher having a non-playable character created in tribute to him in the long-running MMORPG video game ‘World Of Warcraft“.
Fisher, who was an early proponent of the game, was immortalized with a quest giving character by the name of ‘Gorge The Corpsegrinder‘ in the game, for around a decade or so. However, several homophobic slurs he used while describing his love for the game in a 2007 interview forced the then President of the game’s developer Blizzard Entertainment to issue an apology back in 2011.
Regardless, Fisher‘s in-game tribute remained up until this year. With Blizzard Entertainment and publisher Activision facing a wave of harassment and discrimination-related legal issues, including a lawsuit filed by the California Department Of Fair Employment And Housing, steps have been made to rename or even remove in-game creations or names tied to those alleged to have committed some of the more egregious instances of unacceptable behavior.
After player outcry against Fisher‘s character spilled over onto World Of Warcraft-related forums earlier this year given his past comments, the decision was made to more recently rename Fisher‘s character. As such, ‘Gorge The Corpsegrinder‘ has been renamed to ‘Annihilator Grek’lor‘. Fisher himself does not appear to have addressed the controversy.
