Metallica Perform “For Whom The Bell Tolls” Live For ‘BlizzCon’ 2021, Twitch Replace Audio To Avoid Copyright Strike


Metallica delivered a remotely recorded live performance of their track “For Whom The Bell Tolls” as part of yesterday’s (February 19th) opening day of the annual ‘BlizzCon‘. That event is held to celebrate video game developers Blizzard Entertainment, who are known for their ‘Warcraft‘, ‘Overwatch‘, ‘Diablo‘, etc. series of games. While the YouTube livestream of the event went down as expected (see below), the official Twitch stream of Metallica‘s included performance ran into a very noticeable hiccup.

Apparently fearing incurring an automated copyright strike for streaming music they weren’t explicitly licensed to, the official Twitch gaming channel quickly replaced the audio of band’s live performance with a generic copyright free track. You can see how that went below as well:
