Gatecreeper will be dropping their new effort “An Unexpected Reality” tomorrow, January 13th, via Closed Casket Activities. The band’s vocalist Chase Mason had the following to say about the unconventional release date and lack of traditional advance promotion for the release:
“I think the social media environment has just fried our attention spans. Trying to hold someone’s attention for two or three months with a typical album roll-out doesn’t seem feasible with everything else currently going on in the world.”

Speaking further of the offering, he stated:
“It’s meant to be listened to as a whole, so we didn’t wanna break it up or release a couple songs ahead of time as ‘singles’ or whatever. We also didn’t wanna treat it like it’s our next full-length. Because it’s not.”
Rather than a traditional full-length release, the outing finds band in an exploratory phase. The first seven tracks draw inspiration from grind, punk and hardcore with the entirety of them clocking in at under seven minutes. Meanwhile, “Emptiness” is an 11-minute death-doom inspired dirge.
Mason said of that, “I’ve had the idea to do a record like this for a while. In 2020, we were supposed to be touring all year. Once everything got cancelled, we decided it was the perfect time to turn this idea into a reality.”
Speaking further on the creative freedom the outing offered, he explained, “This release was an opportunity to experiment and expand on different ideas within the Gatecreeper formula. It doesn’t necessarily signify a new direction for the band, but we’ll definitely have a couple new tools in our toolbox moving forward.”
