New visual and audio accompaniments to DC Comics‘s Batman, etc. comic book crossover event ‘Dark Nights: Death Metal‘ have been announced. Spearheading the project is Tyler Bates, known for his work scoring films such as ‘Guardians Of The Galaxy‘ and ‘John Wick‘ in addition to his time spent writing and performing with Marilyn Manson. He is overseeing the animatic short film and the accompanying score and soundtrack for it.
Drummer Dave Lombardo (Suicidal Tendencies, ex-Slayer, etc.) took on the percussion duties for the score, while guitar legend Zakk Wylde contributed guitar fx. In the below episode, Black Veil Brides frontman Andy Biersack can be heard voicing Batman, while Chelsea Wolfe voices Wonder Woman. Carach Angren‘s “Skull With A Forked Tongue” plays alongside the credits.
Loma Vista Recordings have announced that they will be releasing the original soundtrack, dubbed ‘Dark Nights: Death Metal The Original Soundtrack‘. While a list of artists and a 2021 release date for that soundtrack are pending, Rise Against‘s new track “Broken Dreams, Inc.” has been revealed as a new official single from it. That song will arrive online in full this coming Wednesday, September 16th. Further track premieres are expected throughout the year.
Bates oversaw the soundtrack with the songs featured on it inspired by the ‘Dark Nights: Death Metal‘ storyline. He commented of that:
“In ‘Dark Nights: Death Metal‘, Loma Vista Recordings and I saw an opportunity to bring artists together to create a diverse soundtrack that is inspired directly by this incredible comic series. Our intent is not to literally create a death metal soundtrack, but instead, to illuminate the darkest corners of each character’s psyche from an authentic perspective that is thematically inherent in death metal music.
But a soundtrack is merely a collection of songs unless it is holistically intertwined with the story teller’s original work. With the support of DC and Loma Vista Recordings, and with the help of several artists, I’m creating a short-form animatic film series derived from Greg Capullo‘s original artwork for ‘Dark Nights: Death Metal‘.
I’ve invited artists on the soundtrack, and pop-culture personalities alike, to voice the characters illustrated in Scott and Greg‘s masterful take on classic DC characters. This has possibly never been more relevant to real life than the challenging time the world is currently experiencing.”
Rise Against frontman Tim McIlrath commented of his band’s involvement:
“Personally, being involved with this soundtrack is really fantastic, Growing up, my little brother and I would ride our bikes to the newsstand near our house and spend all our money on the latest comic books, and Batman was a favorite.
Also, Zach, our guitarist, is probably the biggest comic book geek in our band. He’s talked about how, along with his brother and father, they were all big DC fans – Batman, Robin, Superman, Aquaman, all the comic book series, the TV shows, and feature films. So, yes, we’re all very excited about being part of this.”
You may recall that back in 2018 Bates and Mike Elizondo (Avenged Sevenfold, Dr. Dre) composed a series of tracks for the separate ‘Dark Nights: Metal‘ comics line, enlisting members of Deftones, Mastodon, Alice In Chains and more for the original soundtrack.
A ‘Dark Nights: Death Metal‘ video for Marilyn Manson and Bates‘ 2015 track “Warship My Wreck” was previously released for the series several months back, it can be seen below as well.
