Update: June 23rd 020 02:39 PM:

System Of A Down frontman Serj Tankian has since issued the below post:

“My drummer and brother in law @johndolmayan_ whom I love and respect irrespective of our extremely polarized political commentary and differences has always been my stalwart ally in efforts for recognition of the Armenian genocide within Soad.

The amount of online hate and stupidity against him and I are unjustifiable: social media has created an erroneous digital society that partially thrives on this reality. Remember irrespective of the stance, only artists that truly care and are impassioned will risk alienating their base for what they consider the truth.

Our dilemma and possible fallacy is that we have two in one band. Some may consider that a weakness but the artistic, political and social dichotomy if not quadrichotomy (not a word) has made @systemofadown what it is today. Thank you all for reading. We should all do more non-online reading :)”

Original Story:

The political divide within System Of A Down was once again on display on social media this week, with frontman Serj Tankian and drummer John Dolmayan again expressing wildly different viewpoints. An ideological discord between Tankian and Dolmayan has been playing out in recent weeks, with Tankian widely thought to have been taking thinly veiled shots at Dolmayan, in response to his support for various aspects of U.S. President Donald Trump and the current U.S. administration. Tankian himself publicly remains vehemently opposed to the administration and many of its policies.

Overnight Tankian shared this story published by The Guardian which was titled ‘Rock against racism? Metal’s varied response to Black Lives Matter’. While the piece praised Tankian for his stand on the Black Lives Matter movement and his continued rallying cries against the current administration, it wasn’t as flattering towards Dolmayan. An excerpt from the feature reads:

‘While it would be nice to report these responses were universal, they’re not – even within the same band. John Dolmayan, System of a Down’s drummer, used Instagram to offer his support for Trump’s claim to be the greatest friend to minorities America has ever had, and has continued to continue on that tack, suggesting Democrats are “the true fascist, the true bigots hidden in plain sight from the same party who fought to maintain slavery, Jim Crow, non voting rights for women, and who are directly responsible for 70-plus million abortions, a large majority of whom were black. You don’t want free speech, you can’t handle free speech because you are cowards and need to be herded along with the rest of the sheep.”

Sandra Araya, the wife of Slayer’s Tom Araya, has been posting racist memes to Instagram, and while the views of one person in a marriage should not be ascribed to another, Slayer’s own record on racial politics isn’t watertight given the controversy surrounding Angel of Death, their song about Josef Mengele.’

Tankian shared the article on his social media as follows:

Meanwhile, this morning Dolmayan made note of the aforementioned article and this MetalSucks story on him, which accused him of expressing a racist sentiment in his past social media posts. Dolmayan commented:

“Anyone who perpetuates this kind of baseless attack is as blind to justice as they are void of character. These kinds of fascist tactics are indicative of the establishment machines attempt at silencing free speech and condemning diversity of thought whenever possible .it’s no surprise that the dangerous , billionaire funded ,extreme left along with their puppet mouthpieces in the media and entertainment industry resort to personal attacks and attempt to dehumanize those they deem a threat to their “revolution “.

These people will go to any lengths to destroy any narrative not in line with theirs and when they don’t have a substantive argument or factual backing data they simply insult the opposition and condemn them irrespective of truth.

It worked splendidly for Obama who spent most of his presidential campaigns insulting the character of his political opponents who made no attempt to use similar tactics and lost because of it. Trump simply looked to them for the winning method and took it to a new high ( or low).

This is not what we should be about , these are not the heroes we should respect , and I will not be scared into silence by people who think they have a moral high ground but who in actuality are morally bankrupt.”
