The new project featuring current and former members of Dream Theater, Machine Head, Overkill, etc. fame has officially been dubbed BPMD. That name appears to be a nod to the influential rap group, EPMD. The covers project finds the following musicians teamed up to put their own spin on tracks from American bands from the ’70s:

Bobby “Blitz” Ellsworth (Overkill)
Phil Demmel (Vio-lence/ex-Machine Head)
Mike Portnoy (The Winery Dogs, ex-Dream Theater, etc.)
Mark Menghi (Metal Allegiance)

Speaking recently on ‘The Blairing Out With Eric Blair Show‘, Demmel said of the project:

“It’s called BPMD. So it’s Bobby Blitz, Mike Portnoy, Mark Menghi and Phil DemmelBPMD. It’s all cover tunes from American bands of the ’70s. It’s called ‘American Made‘, [and it’s got songs from] ZZ Top, Lynyrd Skynyrd, James Gang, Aerosmith, Grand Funk Railroad — all these cover tunes that we modernized them and not really thrashed them up, but we made kind of metal versions of them.

And we think we found maybe a label home, and we’re looking to put the record out here probably at the end of the first quarter, maybe beginning of second quarter. It’s all up in the air right now.”

Demmel also went on to say that the band’s included cover of the Blue Öyster Cult‘s “Tattoo Vampire” is his favorite on the track. He revealed that it features a guest appearance from that group’s vocalist/guitarist Buck Dharma.
