Cynic frontman/guitarist Paul Masvidal has commented on the passing of his former bandmate Sean Reinert, who died this past Friday, January 24th, at the age of 48. Reinert‘s cause of death has yet to be determined with his friends and family having recently expressed their shock and confusion over his passing.

Reinert and Masvidal rose to prominence as members of Death in the early 90s together before going on to play two separate runs in Cynic. Reinert would go on to leave the band in 2015 with an ugly split having played out in public. That dispute was later resolved in 2017 via a legal settlement between the pair in regards Masvidal‘s continued use of the band’s trademarks.

In a statement shared via Instagram, Masvidal commented of his late former bandmate:

“I am shocked and saddened by the loss of one of my oldest friends. We were karmic brothers, connected by something beyond both of us. So many memories have been flooding my heart and mind. From the moment I first met Sean in junior high school, I knew we had a connection. His gifts were beyond measure, and I’m grateful that we were able to make music together. In the end, all that remains is love, and that’s what I have for Sean. There will never be another one like him. Peace to his family and all of his fans around the world. Listen to Sean play his drums and hear his heart sing.”
