System Of A Down

John Dolmayan Hopes That System Of A Down Can “Put All The Bullshit Aside” & “Check The Massive Egos At The Door”

By now you’re likely aware of at least some of the long-running roadblocks that have kept System Of A Down from releasing a new album since 2005. While the band are able to continue touring sporadically, their inability to get on the same page in regards to creative and financial disputes has kept them out of the studio.

Going by past statements and interviews with the band, the core hangup seemingly lies be between the band’s guitarist/vocalist Daron Malakian, who largely became the band’s chief songwriter and their frontman Serj Tankian.

Back in 2018, Malakian singled out Tankian as the reason for the band’s lack of new material, causing Tankian to open upon via this public statement on his side of the dispute.

It found Tankian explaining his unhappiness with his lack of creative input in the band and how the financial splits had evolved in the group. Tankian claimed that the ‘lion’s share of publishing’ was going to Malakian, rather than the more equal split they started out with.

He also seemingly touched upon being unhappy with the creative direction the material that was being submitted was taking. As this played out in the public, the band’s other members, bassist Shavo Odadjian and drummer John Dolmayan have largely sat helplessly on the sidelines, with both having repeatedly expressed their wishes for the band to get back in the studio together.

Notably, while the outfit did indeed carve out the rough designs for over a dozen new songs together several years back, the reasons mentioned above kept those songs under lock and key with some of them later being repurposed on Malakian‘s latest Scars On Broadway release, “Dictator“.

This leads us up to yesterday night (December 15th) where Dolmayan took to Instagram to wish for a ‘Christmas miracle’ regarding the band. In the below image showing logos from Tool (who released their first album in 13 years this past summer,) Rage Against The Machine (who will reunite in 2020,) Red Hot Chili Peppers (who recently reunited with their guitarist John Frusciante) and System Of A Down, Dolmayan commented:

“Three of these bands can get out of their own way and work together for a common goal , maybe the fourth can as well. Perhaps it’s time to put all the bullshit aside , check the massive egos at the door , and do together what none of us can do alone . Maybe , just maybe a Christmas miracle will happen. Maybe it can be a System Of A Down”

Tankian himself did comment on the post, only mentioning that he didn’t have the sticker featured in the image, offering “I don’t have that system sticker. I like it upside down :)”.
