Devin Townsend Debuted Several Songs Live During His First Show Back With A Touring Band

0

This past Friday, November 15th, saw Devin Townsend return to playing live with a full band backing him since disbanding his Devin Townsend Project back in early 2018. The show served as the opener for his ongoing European/UK tour with Haken. Townsend has been touring acoustically on his latest release, “Empath“, since putting an end to the Devin Townsend Project era.

He is approaching his return to touring with a full backing band as a series of ‘volumes’, with this first featuring the following musicians:

Vocals/guitars – Ché Aimee Dorval (Casualties Of Cool)
Drums – Morgan Ågren (Kaipa)
Guitars – Mike Keneally (Dethklok)
Ambient guitars – Markus Reuter (Stick Men, Stick Men)
Bass – Nathan Navarro
Keyboards – Diego Tejeida (Haken)

Choir:

Samantha Preis
Anne Preis
Arabella Packford

A second volume will be properly introduced around the spring/summer of 2020 and will find Townsend focusing on the heavier material from his catalog, having already hinted at reintroducing Strapping Young Lad songs into the sets at those shows. The first show for that harder experience will feature an apparently one-time lineup that includes:

Guitars – Wes Hauch (ex-The Faceless/Black Crown Initiate)
Bass – Kyle Konkiel (Bad Wolves)
Drums – Dirk Verbeuren (Megadeth/ex-Soilwork)

He’ll take to the stage with those musicians on the 2020 edition of the ‘70000 Tons Of Metal‘ cruise, which will set which will set sail from Miami/Ft. Lauderdale, FL to Cozumel, Mexico from January 07th to 11th. Townsend has since clarified that there will be more than one lineup for his second volume of touring plans.

As for the opening date of his current tour, it took place at the Salle Pleyel in Paris, France and saw the live debut of several songs. The setlist ran as follows:

Borderlands” (live debut)
Evermore” (live debut)
War
Sprite” (live debut)
