ZZ Top’s Billy Gibbons Says He & Dave Grohl Were Recently In The Studio With Queens Of The Stone Age

It seems the next Queens Of The Stone Age album will be out before the year’s end according to ZZ Top guitarist Billy Gibbons. Gibbons recently revealed that both he and Foo Fighters drummer Dave Grohl took part in the sessions for the outing in May of this year.

Grohl of course previously played drums on Queens Of The Stone Age‘s gold-selling 2002 album “Songs For The Deaf” and later joined the band’s mastermind Josh Homme in a side project called Them Crooked Vultures. Gibbons on other hand appeared on several tracks on Queens Of The Stone Age‘s 2005 album “Lullabies To Paralyze“.

Speaking with Eonmusic at this past weekend’s ‘Hellfest Open Air‘ in Clisson, France, Gibbons was discussing the first anniversary of HELLYEAH/ex-Pantera drummer Vinnie Paul Abbott‘s death, before stating:

“Just one month ago I was making a record with Queens Of The Stone Age and Dave Grohl was also taking part and he decided to have a big BBQ. So there was this interesting gathering. So we spent one hour telling stories, great stories remembering these lovely guys [Dimebag and Vinnie Paul].”

He later commented:

“We had gone to the desert to work on just a couple of tracks, and I was outside, and Josh [Homme, frontman] came out of the studio, and he had this box, and it was making some strange noise, and I said, ‘Hey, what is that?’ And he goes, ‘I don’t know, I just found it.’ I said, ‘Don’t touch a thing; we’re going to use it for the song!’ So that’s how it started.”

As for when we can expect to hear it, he stated:

“He’s completed it. I think that he said he wants to put it out Halloween. It’ll be good.”

While Queens Of The Stone Age are technically due for a new album, you may recall that last month saw Queens Of The Stone Age‘s Josh Homme teasing what appeared to be new entries in ‘The Desert Sessions series of releases. That would certainly make the timing of his teasing interesting given this latest news. It seems we’ll have to wait and see whether or not Gibbons and Grohl show up on a new Queens Of The Stone Age or ‘The Desert Sessions‘ release.
