John Dolmayan On New System Of A Down Album: “I Don’t Know If It’s Ever Gonna Happen At This Point”

System Of A Down drummer John Dolmayan was interviewed by KROQ earlier this week and some System Of A Down questions were asked. If you’re behind the times, the band did get together to write roughly fifteen new songs a year or two back, but at present appear to be nowhere near entering the studio to record them.

The band’s guitarist Daron Malakian himself previously stated that he held off from releasing new Scars On Broadway material back in 2012 just in case some of the song ideas could be used on a new System Of A Down record. Malakian has since let that dream die though and will be releasing his new Scars On Broadway album, “Dictator“, on July 20th.

In this most recent interview, Ted Stryker asked Dolmayan why there hasn’t been a new album yet, to which he replied:

“It’s a complex question. You know I’m ready to go any time and certain members of my band haven’t been able to make it work for themselves. And it’s one of those things where if you can’t get everybody to… If you can’t get everybody to come together and do it, it just doesn’t happen.”

He later continued:

“I don’t know if it’s ever gonna happen at this point. I don’t like saying that but you got to live in the realm of reality and anything we do outside of System is never gonna anywhere be close to System. System is the best thing that anybody in System will ever do. But we still do the other things.”

Dolmayan finished up the interview confirming that he had been in the studio this week with his long-gestating These Grey Men covers project, which he began with his friend James Hazley and planned to have out in early 2015.

His most recent sessions have seen him joined by Franky Perez (Apocalyptica, ex-Scars On Broadway). Dolmayan himself was once a member of Scars On Broadway as well. $55,215 was successfully crowdfunded for the project back in 2014.

System Of A Down themselves have a bunch of West Coast U.S. shows booked for the fall, you can find those dates here.
