Machine Head vocalist/guitarist Robb Flynn took part in a livestream once again yesterday, October 03rd. During the conversation Flynn shared some more insight into the band’s forthcoming album, “Catharsis“, which they have now finished recording. Plans for a January release date are being laid for that outing. The title track is planned to serve as a single from the release with a music video to be shot. He also mentioned that he has been in the studio producing new material from Sworn Enemy.
In regards to the new album, he offered:
“To me this is the record that could have come after ‘The Burning Red‘. It’s really grooving, it’s really melodic. But with the production on ‘Burning Red‘ was like kinda stonery, pretty dark. This is more like classic Machine Head, ‘Blackening‘/’Burn My Eyes‘ type of production, so it has a different effect. It’s got the modern elements too, taking what we started doing with the classical elements and bringing those in on ‘I am Hell‘, ‘Locust‘ and ‘Now We Die‘ and stuff like that.
It’s kind of a melding of those two things. Like I’ve been telling everybody, you’re gonna hear me say this so many times, you’re gonna be sick of hearing me saying this: lower your expectations for the heaviness. It’s a very melodic record and in a lot of ways, it’s shorter songs, it’s simpler songs, so it’s definitely not gonna be ten minute songs left and right like, say, ‘The Blackening‘.”
He also spoke of the Las Vegas concert shooting that took place earlier this week, in which a gunman opened fire on those attending the ‘Route 91 Harvest‘ festival during the evening of October 01st. At least 59 were dead and over 500 were injured as a result of the shooting. Replying to a fan question on gun control, Flynn stated:
“I am in favor of gun control. That motherfucker—everybody heard about the horrible Las Vegas, the horrible horrible… That dude had 23 assault rifles in his fucking hotel room—that is fucking insane to me. That is fucking insane to me, you know? It’s a fucking horrible, it’s a horrible thing that happened in Las Vegas. It’s fucking appalling. When I first heard the news yesterday morning, I couldn’t even put it together…”
“This morning, I thought I don’t ever want to fucking play ‘Davidian‘ again, that’s what I thought this morning. I straight up was like—I even texted it to the dudes, like ‘I don’t want to ever play ‘Davidian‘ again’, like fuck man. It’s fucking crazy. We probably will, we didn’t discuss it and that’s just how I feel right at the moment, but I fucking… It’s some scary shit, it’s fucking crazy out there right now. What the fuck is going on with people right now? It’s fucking crazy.”
The band have extensive touring planned, including this North American tour and this European/UK tour.
