We Came As Romans On Last Album: “The Majority Of The Music Industry Turned Their Back On Us”

We Came As Romans didn’t have to look far for inspiration for their new album, “Cold Like War“. The band members wrote out journals of their past conflicts and frustrations and used them as fuel for the effort. If that wasn’t enough, frontman Dave Stephens recently told Rock Sound that their previous self-titled album, was an uphill battle, despite opening with a healthy 22,600 units in its first week. Notably those sales were only a modest dip from the 26,500 copies its predecessor, 2013’s “Tracing Back Roots” opened with.

When asked if the band felt they had something to prove on this forthcoming opus, Stephens replied:

“Yeah, in all honesty it was a really frustrating record to make. Especially since it seemed that the majority of the music industry turned their back on us during our last record cycle and a lot of people had written us off.

We were at the point where our backs were against the wall and we had a lot to prove – not only to ourselves and the music industry – but we had to hold on to our career.

We had a lot to prove to our fans too, a lot of our fans were doubting us as well. So it was a scary time for us. We knew we had to make something great so we shut down for a year. We didn’t tour, play shows… nothing for a year.

We had to focus and make sure we did it right. Sharptone had faith in us which was awesome, they came around when a lot of other labels were like ‘Nope, you guys are done. No thanks.’ Sharptone had faith in us and put the money forward for us to go in and have as much studio time as we needed, probably more than we needed even. So, yeah I really think we pulled through.”

Stephens also confirmed in the above-mentioned interview that former For Today drummer Dave Puckett has landed a permanent role behind the kit in the band. “Cold Like War” will be released on October 20th.
