Though there’s been some rumblings, it’s now official: DevilDriver‘s next release will be an outlaw country covers album. Frontman Dez Fafara confirmed the news himself with the below Instagram post. In it he reveals that 13 covers are expected to appear on the effort, which is being produced by Steve Evetts (The Dillinger Escape Plan, Every Time I Die).
Fafara also mentions that over 15 musicians will be guesting on the effort from various genres, including those from the metal and country worlds. Among those guests are Lamb Of God guitarist Mark Morton, with whom Fafara previously collaborated with in their side project, Born Of The Storm.
Another guest is John Carter Cash, whom Fafara will be tracking with at Johnny Cash‘s cabin in Nashville, TN on March 28th. Together they will be laying down a cover of Cash‘s “Ghost Riders In The Sky“.
Covers of George Jones, Willie Nelson, Hank Williams Jr., Steve Earle and more are also in the works. Guitarist Neal Tiemann told Guitar World of their vision for the project:
“I think the point is to keep the memorable melodies and lyrics intact while providing an alternate and heavier music bed. It’s easy to get carried away in one of our own riffs, so we’ve been sure to keep refocusing on the essence of the original material.”
