‘Super Mario Bros.’ Villains Were Named After Motörhead’s Lemmy & Plasmatics, Etc. Members

In some Super Mario Bros. trivia I’m shocked I wasn’t aware of, frequent series villains the Koopalings were named after various musicians, including late Motörhead frontman Lemmy Kilmister, who passed away this week. Kotaku tracked down Dayvv Brooks, who worked with Nintendo around the time of  their introduction with the release of ‘Super Mario Bros. 3‘.

An avid music fan, Brooks himself came up with a number of musician inspired names for the characters during English localization of the game. His choices included Ludwig von Koopa (Ludwig von Beethoven,) Roy Koopa (Roy Orbison,) Iggy Koopa (Iggy Pop,) Wendy Koopa (Wendy O. Williams of Plasmatics) and of course Lemmy Koopa (Lemmy Kilmister of Motörhead.) Given Kilmister‘s past history with Wendy O. Williams, it’s kind of fitting they both got a name. In case you’re wondering, Lemmy Von Koopa is the one pictured below with a multi-colored mohawk, which you’d almost think would have worked better for Wendy in hindsight.
