    • i really hope these guys start to come into their own. they’re incredibly talented. if they decide to stop trying to emulate their idols and start developing an identity of their own, they could be amazing.

    • Yeah totally agree with you J3553, these guys are amazing musicians but just havent quite developed thier own sound yet. Even shogun (which was definately a step in the right direction after the crusade) seems to just take elements from a bunch of their influences and arrange them one after another rather than combining them into their own unique sound.

Yeah as much as the Crusade sucked balls and despite Matt being an annoyingly huge egomaniac, they made a good comeback with Shogun and they are pretty talented. Will have to check this out when it drops.

    • shogun is a great album, but it was still very derivative in parts. while i acknowledge that most musicians and bands (especially in metal) are products of their influences, i look at bands like opeth and mastodon who have stepped out and made a definitive sound all their own. i hope trivium can take that step soon.

one of my all-time favorite bands is silverchair *puts on flame suit*. they’re a good example of a band that moved away from their early influences and developed their own identity, which culminated in their masterpiece “diorama”.

    • It’s OK buddy I like silverchair too. Mostly frogstomp but that’s just me. Anyways, I just wanna say this: Why’d that Matt Heafy guy cut off his fucking hair? He looks like he’s in incubus now. Can you picture that dude saying “Take their fucking head!” or whatever?

    • Speaking of Opeth, “He Who Spawned The Furies” off Shogun kind of reminded me of something off Still Life. Nice bit of experimentation there. Sure, Trivium have clear influences, but I do think they’ve carved out more of their own sound than some are willing to give them credit for.

I gotta say, this vid was pretty cool. If that acoustic piece turns into a metal song and its on the album these guys could totally be going in the right direction. I’ll have to check it out or wait for reviews from wookie lol.

    • With all due respect to Wook, I don’t place much stock in his reviews. He and I seem to have different interests and priorities, and it shows in our often radically different reactions to various albums. To each his own, I guess.

@mjclementz : Matt was just losing his hair. Look at pictures of 2009, his hair was receiding and thinning.

I, for one, couldn’t stand Shogun : most of the songs were unfocused and bland, but I’m pretty confident the new one is gonna rock. Trivium, to me, is the only band that is able to make it big and become as big as Slayer or Megadeth sales-wise. Metal definitely needs a new band to lead the way, and Trivium may be that lucky band.
