Poison The Well Clarify Hiatus Plans
Poison The Well have further clarified their recent decision to go on hiatus. A newly posted series of tweets from the band on their official Twitter account offered the following insight:
“Just to be clear..PTW is NOT completely done. We just want to take a break for a while. I know we will create again, that’s not an issue. we just have to be in the right head space and want to do it. Let some time pass and I think we will be good to do a tour or a record. We are just a bit burnt out on everything.”

Well this is at least hopeful they’ll come back stronger than before. Dare I even say with Derek back? Oh god please bring Derek back.
::wipes forehead:: Sheesh. I was kinda worried there.
come back soon.
One of my faves…come back soon boys!
thanks sleigh bells!
i love this band. they were one of the first heavy bands i ever liked. i hope they come back and make an amazing album
More like: Poison The Well clarify the word “hiatus” to conclusion-jumping fans. Come on people, crack open a dictionary. Or frikkin’ google it.
Ok good so i can take down my shrine and stop slitting my wrists. Thanks PTW!!
@robichaud1 – I think it’s just more that lately, a band going on “hiatus” has almost become synonymous with breaking up. Hearing the band make a statement about the details of it helps us understand the situation and feel a little bit more involved in it. Clearly we care because we love the band and don’t want them to go anywhere.
These guys basically got me into hardcore (or should I say post-hardcore) with “The Opposite of December”, so I have a lot of myself invested in them. Not to say that I expect they’ll be around forever, but it’ll be a sad day when/if they do call it a day.
I kind of feel like “Tropic Rot” was lacking a certain spark that made their work great, so if they need to take some time, then they have to do what they have to do. I’m certain that some of their best work is still ahead of them (although I said the same thing about Number 12, and now… -_-).
Don’t be like Number 12 PTW! Please.
@TheMechanica – To me, it feels like they lost their spark when Derek left. He was a major contributing factor in their song writing. I’m not saying that the last 2 album haven’t been good without him, but I agree with you that they have lacked something. I feel that something is Derek.
Sleigh Bells, more like Sleigh Balls! Shit is terrible, sounds like Lady Gaga on acid. Derek is gone for good, but whatever I’m sure they will be back with a vengeance.
Maybe you’re right… I can’t say I didn’t notice the difference. I believe they did start to fall back on a certain sound after a point. Don’t get me wrong, it was a good sound, but I felt they had hit the same notes a few too many times (both literally and figuratively). What kills me is that whole incident with their gear… that was so god-damn low. Whoever did that is just the biggest scumbag. These guys have been doing so damn much good for so long, and THAT happens? Awful.
I love the direction they went with Versions and The Tropic Rot…but my personal favorite will always be You Come Before You. Amazing album that doesn’t have a single bad track.
wow anti -db, i’ve been waiting for somebody to say that for years!!! you come before you by far!
I dont believe that detroit influenced their decision at all! I had the chance to talk to jeff after a show last year and he said that he is financially set for the rest of his life. These guys busted ass for over a decade. Always touring and doing it economically. I’ve seen them about a dozen times, and more times than not they were getting around in a van, not a luxurious tour bus. He told me they sleep in 2 or 3 star hotels that they book on priceline .com for 40 bucks a night. They did shit their way (the right way) and will reap the benefits. -NEW BANDS TAKE NOTICE ! To write albums as awesome and subjective as the tropic rot, sufficient time is required. They’re not, nor have they ever been the type to shit an album out to meet a quota like unearth or god forbid did. And if you really pay attention to the tropic rot you’ll understand that the end is coming for ptw. Poison the Well is and will always be my favorite band right next to Pantera. At least there is hope that at anytime ptw will play more shows in the future. By the way, fuck detroit anyway.
Must say when I heard the news they were taking a break it honestly made me physically ill. This band has meant so fucking much to me over the years. If it weren’t for “The Opposite of December” I don’t know if I would have grown into the hardcore kid I’ve been all these years. Every album they have released has been a masterpiece of art and expression in my opinion.
Overall though, I just hate to see the really amazing bands like PTW go to way side while all these terrible like-sounding bands are taking hold of the aggressive music world. Shit even the good deathcore bands at this point have burnt themselves out…first it was Harlots,Animosity, and now even Despised Icon is out of the game. I miss Poison the Well already…let’s just hope Glassjaw gets their shit together and releases a fucking album already.
When Derek left I thought their material would take a bit of a nose-dive but when Versions came out I was pretty impressed. Tropic Rot has got to be one of my favourite albums from last year. So I don’t think the effect of Derek has been as significant as I originally thought.
For those of you who got the “You Come Before You” DVD many years back, you see Derek’s overall contribution to the band. He was definitely portrayed as being a vital member. Which is why when news broke he was leaving, I was pretty concerned about the future of the band.
Anyways, I hope they enjoy their time off and come back in a few years and release a bad-ass album.
i like the band. a lot! but.. i feel they have been going down hill even with the last two “improvements” they recorded. after Tear from the red I lost a lot of the intense need to jam them constantly. and You come before you was shit!!! they are not the refused and should not try to be ever again.
@ the forbiddenfool.
excellent point!!!!!
@Will – That Refused sound you speak of was Derek. It was apparent on every album he was on. Being that Refused was his biggest influence, it’s easy to see why their sound progressed more towards that. Also more proof as to how big of a factor he played in their song writing.
Is Jeff is Sleigh Bells now? Sick.
